Founded in 1958, the Pan-Hellenic Council of New York City, Inc. encom-passes the nine historically black fraternities and sororities, which include Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., & Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., in the New York City Area. The Council covers 54 different alumni, alumnae and graduate chapters of the nine organizations in New York City, with members who are college educated professionals and community leaders.
The NPHCNYC was organized to assist and to promulgate the common philosophy of the combined groups, community service and the education of our youth. It coordinates the activities of the organizations through forums, monthly meetings, exchange of information, cooperative programs and social functions in the metropolitan area. Giving back to our communities nurtures the organizations and it is the best way to develop and produce our future leaders.
In 2017, the Pan-Hellenic Council of Greater New York, Inc. was renamed the Pan-Hellenic Council of New York City, Inc. to reflect our current jurisdiction and the immediate communities in which we serve. Giving back to our communities nurtures the organizations and it is the best way to develop and produce our future leaders. We have an active role in our future. The following programs represent a sampling of the many outstanding fellowship/social efforts which affirm the Council’s commitment to humanity:
Careers Conference
Our flagship program in social action and education continues to be the C. Melvin Patrick Careers Conference. The purpose of the Conference is to provide an opportunity for the students of New York City (from seventh grade to college sophomores) to meet and seek guidance and information on the careers and college experiences from a variety of professionals.
Candidate Forums
The Council provides platforms for candidates running for office in Greater New York and participates in watch parties for those running for national offices.
Scholarships
Through fundraising, the Council annually provides scholarships to high school seniors who have committed to matriculate in college.
Social Action Programs
In keeping with the mission of the Panhellenic Council, we annually hold voter registration drives and blood drives, collaborate with third parties to help feed and clothe those in shelters, and contribute to increasing awareness of premature births (i.e. March of Dimes, now called March for Babies) .
The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated (NPHC) is currently composed of nine (9) Historically Black Greek letter Sororities and Fraternities.
